IT Asset Management
The value of an IT asset is maximized by ensuring the asset is used to add value to the organization. First, this means the asset is purchased for a business purpose. Second, the asset is used responsibly and for its intended purpose. Third, the asset’s cost, risk, and compliance are monitored and managed. Finally, the asset is disposed of responsibly.
A primary challenge for ITAM is coordinating the multiple departments and people that “touch” an asset or have a vested interest in the asset’s performance. For example, a “touch” can be made by the people that approve the IT budget, approve the purchase, order the asset, receive the asset, configure the asset, deploy the asset, store the asset, maintain the asset, use the asset, or dispose of the asset. People who have a vested interest in the asset include finance, legal, vendor management, HR, business unit leaders, and executive management.
SAM is a sub-discipline of ITAM and is focused on managing software assets. License Asset Management, or LAM, is a sub-discipline of SAM and is focused on addressing the details of specific software publisher’s licenses.
Cloud Asset Management
